Certificate in Asbestos Management for Education Providers

Course Duration: 35 minutes (approx.)

This course will provide school leaders, school staff, governing bodies and responsible bodies (as duty holders) with practical advice and guidance on how to manage asbestos in educational settings, in line with the 2020 DfE ‘Asbestos Management in Schools’ guidance. The guidance states the importance of locating and managing asbestos in schools effectively. Failure to comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 is a criminal offence.

  • Understand your legislative responsibilities and wider duties under health and safety regulations around managing asbestos in schools.
  • Recognising the different types of asbestos, associated risks and individual responsibilities of senior leaders, dutyholders and school staff.
  • Identifying how to meet the day to day management of asbestos in schools, including undertaking surveys, assessing risks and preparing a management plan.
  • Understanding how to manage the risk of asbestos disturbance during work on the school premises and actions to take if there is an affected area.

Course Units

Introduction

Module 1: Health & Safety Law for Asbestos

In module 1, you will learn about the legislative framework and wider duties under health and safety legislation that schools must have oversight of in managing asbestos.

Module 2: Asbestos Risk

Module 2 will provide detailed information on what asbestos is, where it can be found and how it can present it itself as a risk and pose health problems.

Module 3: Responsibilities for Managing Asbestos

In module 3, you will learn about the responsibilities that different roles have in managing asbestos, including governing bodies and proprietors, dutyholders, appointed persons and all school staff.

Module 4: Day to Day Management of Asbestos in Your School or College

In module 4, you will learn about the five steps to take to meet the core requirements for day-to-day asbestos management in your school including management surveys, risk assessments and training.

Module 5: Asbestos Management During Maintenance or Building Works

In module 5, you will understand the actions you must take where work is carried out on the premises that could potentially disturb asbestos, including upgrading, refurbishment or demolition.

Module 6: What to Do if Things Go Wrong

Module 6 will look at what you must do if something goes wrong and you find that there has been, or may have been, an unplanned disturbance of asbestos at your school.
