The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 places a responsibility on all schools to control substances that are hazardous to health. It is essential that all staff are able to recognise potential hazards, create a safe working environment and respond effectively in the event of an emergency.

Module 1: What are hazardous substances?

In module 1, you will learn what hazardous substances are, what different forms hazardous substances can take, the effects of hazardous substances and how they can get into the body.

Module 2: Law regarding hazardous substances

Module 2 will explore what the law is around hazardous substances and the legal obligations that fall on employers. It will explain what COSHH is, break down the different regulations and cover what exactly health surveillance is.

Module 3: Classification and COSHH symbols

In module 3 you will learn more about the different classifications of hazardous substances and how to recognise different COSHH symbols. It will also provide examples as to where these substances might be found on a day to day basis.

Module 4: Assessment of health risks – COSHH assessment

Module 4 will cover what a COSHH assessment is and how it should be used. It will also go through each of the five steps which make up a best practice COSHH assessment.

Module 5: Sources of information

In module 5 you will explore what the three main forms of information for hazardous substances are. It will cover what each of the sources of information will provide you with and what a typical data safety sheet will include.

Module 6: Hierarchy of controls

Module 6 will explain what the hierarchy of controls is and how hazards should be reduced to the lowest level of risk that is reasonably practical.

Module 7: Hazardous waste disposal

In the final module you will learn how waste material, including chemical waste, becomes hazardous. It will cover the different categories that hazardous waste falls into and what the regulations are under COSHH.
