Diabetes is a chronic, long term health condition that requires monitoring and management by individuals. Over 4 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes and need to manage this with either medication or specific lifestyles. This course equips professionals with the best approach to manage diabetes in the workplace.

This essential CPD course provides you with the core content you need to understand the types of diabetes, how it affects individuals and confidently offer help and support to those managing diabetes in your workplace.

Split into bite-size modules, the training has been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost effective and most time-efficient manner. It has been produced in high quality remote video CPD format which is accessible on any device, anytime, anywhere.

Delivered by qualified emergency medical technician Samantha Kendall, the course has been divided into six modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning.

Learning outcomes

  • Understanding diabetes, including the two types of diabetes, the associated symptoms and how it can be managed through medicine or lifestyle changes.
  • Developing an awareness of the impact that diabetes can have on a person’s work and personal life including the need to create a safe work environment in which a person can administer their medication.
  • Identifying complications that may arise and identifying what constitutes a diabetic emergency.
  • Understanding the responsibilities of employers to support those who have diabetes at work.
  • Understanding the practical applications of the 2010 Equality Act in particular reference to managing diabetes.

Modules

Module 1: What is diabetes and how does it affect people?

Module one will give an overview of the importance of diabetes awareness. It will discuss what diabetes is, the symptoms of it and how each type will affect individuals and the long and short-term complications associated with diabetes.

Module 2: The law and diabetes at work

Module two will give an understanding of the impact of the Equality Act 2010 on managing those with diabetes in the workplace, including all elements of the employee lifecycle from best recruitment practice to managing absences appropriately and post-employment requirements.

Module 3: Types of treatment: medication, exercise, and diet

Module three will give an overview of the aims of medication, treatments and management techniques for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and the importance and impact of insulin. It will also provide an understanding of the impact of diet and exercise on diabetes.

Module 4: The Impact of diabetes and potential complications

Module four will cover the impact of diabetes on all elements of a person’s life, including practical considerations from driving and sex lives, to the emotional impact and associated illnesses. It will also offer an overview of the best way to manage employees experiencing complications in the workplace.

Module 5: Identifying and managing diabetic emergencies

This module will give people the ability to identify the occurrence of a diabetic emergency and the tools to manage them appropriately, such as emergency intervention and the need to seek support from trained medical professionals.

Module 6: Supporting children and young people with diabetes

Module 6 focuses on supporting children and young people with diabetes in educational settings, how to treat them, how they may administer medical treatment themselves, and how to spot warning signs.
