Domestic abuse is a child protection issue that schools must be prepared for. All children can witness and be adversely affected by domestic abuse in the context of their home life where domestic abuse occurs between family members. Exposure to domestic abuse and/or violence can have a serious, long lasting emotional and psychological impact on children.

Module 1: Context, definitions and types of domestic violence and abuse
Module 1 will provide some context around occurrences of domestic abuse in the UK as well as exploring the Domestic Abuse Bill 2020 and how domestic abuse can take different forms.
Module 2: Why is discussing the cause of abuse problematic?
Module 2 will discuss the complexity of domestic abuse and violence and explore barriers to leaving an abusive home environment.
Module 3: Causes of domestic violence and abuse
Module 3 will explore common traits of abusers, the warning signs of domestic violence and abuse and discuss possible causes.
Module 4: Indicators of non-abusive behaviour
Module 4 will present the indicators of non-abusive behaviour as a means of identifying an abusive relationship.
Module: 5 Health and social impacts of domestic violence and abuse
Module 5 will focus on the impact of domestic violence and abuse on parenting capacity and risk factors for significant harm.
Module 6: Domestic violence and children
Module 6 will discuss the impact of domestic violence on children and how it can affect them, including experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES).
Module 7: Intervention strategies when children are involved
Module 7 will explore the various intervention strategies when children are involved. It will explore the Domestic Abuse Bill in more detail and other legislation which can be used to protect children.
Module 8: How to support children
Module 8 will take you through the different stages in victims’ typical psychological responses to violence and abuse, how they take shape and why they occur.
Module 9: Resilience, coping mechanisms and support available
Module 9 will discuss how to prepare for and respond to a domestic incident, and what action to take afterwards.
Module 10: Approaching victims and common mistakes
Module 10 explores some of the myths and stereotypes surrounding victims of domestic violence and abuse in order to avoid any preconceptions.
Module 11: Risk Assessments
Module 11 will focus on the Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) and how it operates to help victims. It also discusses the DASH risk checklist.
Module 12: Case studies
Module 12 will provide some case studies to enhance your understanding of real-life domestic abuse and violence and provide further guidance on reporting incidents.
Module 13: Resources
Module 13 will provide you with some external resources to help with referrals and develop a wider understanding of domestic abuse and violence.
