It is crucial that your staff can recognise, follow, and implement the correct procedures to prevent or control infection, particularly with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This essential CPD course provides you with the core content you need to ensure you are equipped to prevent and limit the spread of infection and illness in the workplace and understand the importance of maintaining hygiene standards at work.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understanding what infections are, what causes them and how they most commonly spread.
  • Understanding the legal requirements around infection control and prevention measures in the schools and the responsibilities on school leaders to protect staff and pupils.
  • Recognising how to respond to and manage an incident related to poisoning and what symptoms to look out for.
  • Acknowledging the importance of correct infection control policy and process, communicating clearly and ensuring an effective approach to keeping everyone safe.
  • Identifying the role of personal hygiene and proper hygiene practices in combatting infection and learning basic techniques for putting on and removing PPE.

Course Units

Introduction

Delivered by qualified emergency medical technician, Samantha Kendall, the course has been divided into six modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning.

Module 1: What is an infection?

The opening module clearly outlines what infections and infectious diseases are, where they most frequently stem from, and which types of individual are at the greatest risk of infection.

Module 2: Poisons

Module 2 will explore what poisons are, how they enter the body, and the symptoms associated with poisoning. You will also learn the best course of action appropriate for each incident.

Module 3: The control of substances hazardous to health

Module 3 will examine COSHH – the control of substances hazardous to health. This module will draw on the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 to explain what COSHH is and what your responsibilities are.

Module 4: Material safety data sheet

This module explores what a material safety data sheet (MSDS) is and why it is crucial to your workplace. You will learn what details need to be involved in the document and who it is for.

Module 5: Personal protective equipment

Module 5 examines ways to prevent infection by disposing of waste safely and using basic PPE correctly. It also describes your legal responsibility to provide suitable PPE to your staff as well as training and supervision.

Module 6: The control of hazardous substances to health in education

The final module prepares you for COSHH in an education setting. It outlines the responsibilities of the school management to ensure staff and students are protected and understand the meaning of COSHH symbols.
