About The Course

Certificate in Legionella Awareness

Course Duration: 26 minutes (approx.)

Companies have a legal duty to manage Legionella under the updated Health and Safety Executive’s code of practice. Legionella bacteria can cause Legionnaires’ disease and cause serious harm to people’s health. Therefore, leaders of every premises with a man-made water system must ensure that the system is free from bacteria, safe to use and regularly maintained.

This essential CPD course provides you with the core content you need to learn more about the health risks created by Legionella bacteria, the legal responsibilities of duty holders and how to develop control measures, including risk assessments.

Split into bite-size modules, the training has been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost effective and most time-efficient manner. It has been produced in high quality remote video CPD format which is accessible on any device, anytime, anywhere.

Delivered by health and safety expert James Whelan, the course has been divided into four modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning.

Learning outcomes

  • Understanding and developing an awareness of Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease and what groups of people are more at risk from Legionella.
  • Understanding the legislative requirements around managing Legionella in the workplace, the importance of doing so and the practical application of legislative requirements.
  • Recognising the hazardous environments in which Legionella can develop and the risks to people’s health, including the impact of temperature, material and stagnation.
  • Understanding the role of employees and employers in keeping colleagues safe from risks presented by Legionella in the workplace.
  • Developing an awareness of ways to manage legionella in the workplace, including applying written scheme and risk assessments.

Course Units

Introduction

Delivered by health and safety expert James Whelan, the course has been divided into five modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning.

Module 1: What is Legionella and what is Legionnaires’ disease?

Module one will give an overview of what Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease are including how common they are, the results of Legionella infections and what groups of people are more at risk.

Module 2: The law and its application

Module two will give an overview of the key legislation relating to Legionella in the workplace and practical advice as to how to apply this in your company premises.

Module 3: Legionnaires’ risk assessment

Module three will explore what to consider when completing a risk assessment, including the responsibilities of the employer and how the identified risks can be managed.

Module 4: The written control scheme for Legionella

Module four will look at the written control scheme for Legionella, including what it should include and how it relates to the risk assessment.
