About The Course

Certificate in Manual Handling (2022-23)

Course Duration: 34 minutes (approx.)

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to ensure that all employees are trained and competent in manual handling. Both employers and employees have legal duties to ensure that manual handling tasks in the workplace are as safe as possible.  

Our essential CPD course provides you with the core content you need to understand the principles and practice of safe manual handling and ensure you meeting the necessary legislative requirements. 

Split into bite-size modules, the training has been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost effective and most time-efficient manner. It has been produced in high quality remote video CPD format which is accessible on any device, anytime, anywhere.  

Delivered by health and safety expert James Whelan, the course has been divided into five modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning. 

Designed in line with the following policies:

  • Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
  • Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended 2002)
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998

Learning objectives:

  • Understanding the legislation relating to manual handling in the workplace and the responsibilities of employers in relation to manual handling.  
  • Knowing and understanding the risks of poor manual handling and how injuries in the workplace are caused.  
  • Gaining a grounding in safe manual handling techniques, including lifting and lowering, carrying and moving, pushing and pulling and handling whilst seated.  
  • Understanding the purpose of risk assessments in identifying, prioritising and controlling risks, taking account of Task, Individual, Load and Environment (TILE). 
  • Understanding and knowing how to apply the manual handling hierarchy of controls and how this relates to risk assessments.  

Course Units

Introduction

Delivered by health and safety expert James Whelan, the course has been divided into five modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning. 

Module 1: Manual handling and the law

Module One will look at what the law says about manual handling and the responsibilities of employers in terms of manual handling in the workplace.

Module 2: Consequences of poor manual handling

This module will explore the consequences of poor manual handling, including back pain and how injuries caused by poor manual handling are caused.

Module 3: The manual handling hierarchy of controls

Module Three will outline the hierarchy of controls, how to apply these and how they relate to the Manual Handling Regulations. It also explores how to assess and reduce the risks.

Module 4: Manual handling risk assessments

This module will explain how risk assessments should be used to identify, prioritise and control risks, taking account of Task, Individual, Load and Environment (TILE).

Module 5: Good manual handling techniques

The final module will explain good manual handling techniques, what to consider when performing manual handling tasks and how to do perform manual handling safely.
