About The Course

Annual Certificate in Mental Health for the Designated Governor

Course Duration: 1 hour 35 minutes (approx.)

All boards should assign a designed governor for mental health as a wellbeing champion to provide strategic support to the school leadership team in line with best practice stated in the governance handbook. This also falls in line with the importance placed on pupil wellbeing in Keeping children safe in education.

Developed by Anna Bateman, mental health and wellbeing expert who works in an advisory role for the DfE, this essential CPD course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the role of the designated governor for mental health and give you the confidence to impact the lives of pupils and adults in school.

Please note: The course consists of learning through video, task completion and further reading/research. Please consider this when planning and allocating your time. To successfully understand and achieve the objectives from the course, learners are expected to engage in all aspects of the learning process and complete all relevant activities to ensure they can successfully apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in their own setting.

  • Understanding the importance of implementing a designated governor for mental health in schools to support the wellbeing of staff and students.
  • Developing your knowledge of a whole school approach to promoting good wellbeing and mental health, including preventive measures.
  • Identifying the various duties that the senior mental health lead undertakes in their capacity in schools and how they develop an emotionally safe environment.
  • Appreciating how to develop a curriculum to promote good wellbeing and how measures such as these can help vulnerable groups and pupils with SEND.
  • Embedding a culture of wellbeing for staff that reminds them that their own mental health is as important as their pupils’.
