Annual Certificate in Safer Recruitment for Education Settings (2022-23)

Course Duration: 1h 15m (approx) online training + self-directed learning and activities + final assessment.

All schools must ensure that they have robust policies in place around the selection and suitability of prospective employees and that they are proactively creating a culture of safer recruitment. It is essential that all staff have an awareness of safer recruitment as part of their statutory duty to keep children safe from harm and abuse.

This Essential CPD course provides you with the core content you need to understand your statutory and legislative requirements as part of the safer recruitment process.

Split into bite-sized modules, the training has been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost-effective and most time-efficient manner. It has been produced in high-quality remote video CPD format which is accessible on any device, any time, anywhere.

Developed by Lorna Ponambalum, safeguarding expert and senior leadership education professional, the course is split into eight modules . The course consists of learning through video modules, completion of tasks, further reading and viewing external resources. Please consider this when planning and allocating your time. To successfully understand and achieve the objectives from the course, learners are expected to engage in all aspects of the learning process and complete all relevant activities to ensure they can successfully apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in their own setting.

Module 1: Understanding safer recruitment

Module 1 will explore the concept of safe recruitment, provide an overview of the recruitment process and demonstrate – through a case study – what can happen when correct procedures aren’t followed.

Module 2: Safer recruitment guidance and legislation

In this module, you will look at government guidance and legislation with respect to safer recruitment, as well as how safer recruitment should be conducted in an education setting.

Module 3: The recruitment process

Module 3 looks at the importance of have a correct recruitment process, including requirements and relevant qualifications, and determining the applicants suitability for the position.

Module 4: The interview process

In module 4, you will explore pre-interview checks and why they are essential, while considering the different formats that an interview can take and how these promote safer recruitment.

Module 5: The induction process

In this module, you will look at the role of the induction process, what it involves and consider how it supports safer recruitment.

Module 6: DBS checks

Module 6 will consider the different types of DBS checks, how someone can be referred to the barred list, changes to the DBS legislation and why these checks are so important to safer recruitment process.

Module 7: Employment checks

In module 7, you will explore other required pre-employment checks, including the right to work in the UK, verification of qualifications and the need for satisfactory references.

Module 8: Further considerations and practical advice

In this module, you will learn about the additional role considerations, demonstrating commitment to effective safeguarding practice and best practice in safer recruitment.

Module 9: Reflection on your learning

In the final module, you will reflect on all of the content that you have learnt throughout the course with respect to the different stages of the safer recruitment process.
