About the course

Duration: 1 hour (approx.)

All schools should adopt a robust and effective strategy to help keep children safe online. Senior leaders should ensure that their school is aspiring to a culture of online safety which integrates with the school's safeguarding practice.

Our International Online Safety for Leaders course provides you with the core content to ensure that your school is taking a comprehensive approach to online safety. Delivered in high-quality video, in a format organised to fit around busy workloads, this course is accessible on any device, at any time. National Online Safety’s CPD-accredited training is designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost-effective and time-efficient manner.

Delivered by international safeguarding expert Robin Watts, the course is divided into eight easy-to-digest modules. It contains links to further learning and resources throughout, with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your compliance in online safety training.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the nature of the online world today, how children’s online usage develops with age and what online risks they may be exposed to.
  • Recognising the different roles and responsibilities of educators around online safety and developing robust and rigorous online safety policies to help mitigate risk.
  • Identifying the role of the larger school community, recognising internal reporting procedures and how to handle online safety concerns.
  • Understanding the need for filtering and monitoring systems to be in place and establishing best practice methods.
  • Recognising the signs of online abuse, how the internet can be misused and where schools can seek further advice and support.

Why online safety is needed in schools

Module 1 will discuss why online safety is so important and explore some of the main risks that children are facing today.

The role of school leaders

Module 2 will explore what the responsibilities of senior school leaders are and how they should look to develop a whole school culture of online safety.

Staff roles and responsibilities

In module 3 you will learn about the roles and responsibilities of other key members of staff who can support the delivery of and advise on implementing effective online safety practice.

Responsibility to the larger school community

In module 4 you will explore the role of the larger school community in safeguarding children online including volunteers, pupils, parents and external groups.

Understanding internal policy and reporting procedures

Module 5 will cover the relevant policies that schools should look to have in place in order to implement effective online safety provision and support efficient reporting processes.

Implementing firewalls and filtering Systems

Module 6 will discuss what filters and monitoring systems senior leaders must have in place and the criteria they should meet in order to protect children from harmful and inappropriate content.

Recognising online risks

In module 7 you will learn to recognise the signs of online abuse and some of the main online risks that children may encounter at different ages.

Embedding online safety and further resources

Module 8 will provide you with an example of one school’s approach to online safety and signpost further advice and support to help you meet your own school objectives.
