About The Course

An Introduction to Online Safety for Parents of Children Aged 11-14

Presented by broadcaster and online safety advocate Myleene Klass, this course’s content has been compiled in collaboration with our expert Heather Cardwell, a practising online safety lead who is CE-OP (Child Exploitation Online Protection) trained.

Engaging parents and carers in online safety has never been more important. Understanding the different risks that children might experience at different ages means that parents have to stay up to date in order to feel confident, supportive and empowered to help keep their children safe online.

This short course provides you with an important insight into how children aged 11 to 14 are typically engaging with the online world. It will highlight the common areas where pre-teens and early-teens now focus their attention online as they get to grips with increased independence, and what steps parents should consider around setting filters, discussing content online and encouraging healthy device usage.

Why did we produce the course?

At first it almost seems obvious that parents will know what their children are doing online. However, the more we spoke to schools and listened to their feedback, the more it became clear that parents needed our help now more than ever.

There was a demand for something that would give parents the information they need in a clear, easy-to-follow and engaging manner. Something that was relatively short but hit the main points that they needed and wanted to know.

Most of all, it was clear that they required something, or someone, that they could relate to.

Why we worked with Myleene Klass

Myleene Klass is a hugely talented musician, TV Presenter and social media blogger. She has been in the public eye for almost 20 years.

However, above all else, she is a mother to three amazing children.

Her children are aged one, nine and thirteen and, like many parents, she doesn’t want to get left behind when it comes to understanding what they are accessing, viewing and engaging with online.

She cares deeply for children’s wellbeing, serving as an ambassador for both Save the Children and Youth Music, a national charity dedicated to investing in music-making projects to create opportunities for disadvantaged children.

Furthermore, she has been a passionate advocate for online safety since 2003.

For those reasons alone, she was the perfect fit.

What’s in the course?

Our parent’s course for children aged 11-14 has been split into small, bite-size sections that explain:

• How children are engaging and interacting with the online world

• How their attitudes and behaviours might change

• What types of apps and games they might start showing an interest in

• What safety measures parents should start to consider

• Where parents can get further advice and support

At the end of the course, there will be a short quiz testing parent’s knowledge on some of the key points highlighted throughout.

Who developed the course?

Lorna Ponambalum, safeguarding expert, education professional, former Designated Safeguarding Lead and Mental Health Lead and with over 23 years' teaching experience.

Heather Cardwell, practicing online safety lead, Acting Assistant Head and Phase 5 Leader with over 15 years’ experience as both a Computer Lead and Online Safety Lead.
