Certificate in Paediatric First Aid Awareness (2022-23)

Course Duration: 45 minutes (approx.)

All schools have a legal responsibility and duty of care towards protecting their pupils, including relevant first aid provision. It is essential that all staff have an awareness of how to provide first aid for children in case of an emergency and have the confidence to be able to react if children need urgent medical care.

Delivered by subject matter expert, Samantha Kendall, the course has been divided into 8 easily digestible modules and contains references to further learning and resources with an assessment test at the end to help you evidence your paediatric first aid compliance.

Introduction

Module 1: Calling for Help

In module 1, you will explore the procedure around calling for both emergency and non-emergency attention and the type of information that you will need to provide.

Module 2: How to Help an Unconscious Child and Baby

Module 2 will provide learners with information on assessing an unconscious child and baby and how to demonstrate the recovery position. It will also define what the difference is between unconsciousness and fainting.

Module 3: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

In module 3, you will learn about Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and be provided with a basic demonstration of how to perform CPR to a child and a baby.

Module 4: Minor and Major Bleeds

Module 4 will cover the three different types of bleeding that you may come across. It will demonstrate simple bandaging for minor wounds, as well as discussing methods for dealing with major bleeds.

Module 5: Burns

In module 5, you will learn about how to treat a burn and what to remember in different situations.

Module 6: Choking

In module 6, you will understand how to recognise different types of choking and be given the confidence to deal with choking situations involving children and babies.

Module 7: Childhood Illnesses

Module 7 will cover different types of severe illnesses that are common in children including meningitis, croup, asthma and seizures. It will explore the different signs and symptoms as well as discussing different treatment methods for each.

Module 8: Automatic Injector Pens

In the final module, you will learn about different allergies and the different indicators often associated with an allergy. You will also be given a demonstration of how an automatic injector pen works.
