About The Course

Certificate in Understanding Risk Assessments

About the Course

Duration: 20 minutes (approx.)

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers must carry out appropriate risk assessments to ensure the health and safety of their employees or other persons. It is a legal requirement to provide a safe setting for employees and actively reduce potential risks.

This essential CPD course provides you with the core content you need to understand the legislative framework around conducting risk assessments, key practical risk assessment techniques and the monitoring, evaluation and review processes.

Split into bite-sized modules, the training has been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost-effective and time-efficient manner. It has been produced in high-quality remote video CPD format which is accessible on any device, anytime, anywhere.

Delivered by health and safety expert James Whelan, the course has been divided into four modules with a knowledge assessment at the end to help you evidence your learning.

Designed in line with the following policies:

  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

Learning outcomes:

  • Understanding the legislation and regulations put in place to ensure health and safety practices are running in your organisation.
  • Understanding the application of the five steps to a risk assessment and how to apply the most appropriate type of risk assessment.
  • Knowing how to apply the hierarchy of controls when working to mitigate and manage risks in the workplace.
  • Learning the principles of prevention and what measures you must implement to reduce all potential risks.
  • Understanding the dangers that are present, or may become present, in your organisation so that you may predict and prevent risk.

Modules

Module 1: Hazards, risk and legal requirements

Module one explore how to formulate a risk assessment, how to identify the difference between a hazard and a risk. It outlines how the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations are applied in workplaces.

Module 2: Types of risk assessments

Module two will explore the types of risk assessments including qualitative, quantitative and dynamic risk assessments. It outlines when each apply, how to apply them and for what risks they are most appropriate.

Module 3: Five steps to a risk assessment

Module three outlines each of the steps in ‘the five steps to a risk assessment’ process and explores what actions are involved in each, including recording. It offers practical examples of what to consider and the impact of actions taken at each stage.

Module 4: Hierarchy of controls

Module four explores the hierarchy of controls and the order of priority in which to approach risks. It covers elimination and substitution; engineering controls; administrative controls; PPE, outlining each and when they should be applied.
