About The Course

Annual Certificate in Child Protection and Safeguarding: Sports, Active Leisure and Physical Education

All schools, organisations or clubs that offers sports activities for children to enjoy have a responsibility to keep them safe. All staff, including private tutors, visiting sports or physical education teachers and education professionals, must understand and comply with child protection and safeguarding measures in line with government guidance and relevant legislation.

Developed by Lorna Ponambalum, an independent safeguarding consultant with over 15 years’ experience as a DSL in education, this essential CPD course provides you with the knowledge and skills to understand your child protection and safeguarding duties if working in sports, active leisure or physical education.

Please note: The course consists of learning through video, task completion and further reading/research. Please consider this when planning and allocating your time. To successfully understand and achieve the objectives from the course, learners are expected to engage in all aspects of the learning process and complete all relevant activities to ensure they can successfully apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in their own setting.

  • Understanding why it’s important to have robust, regularly updated safeguarding measures in place within your setting or organisation.
  • Developing your knowledge of the definition of child abuse and the statutory guidance and legislation in relation to safeguarding and child protection.
  • Identifying signs and indicators of safeguarding concerns, including how to respond appropriately to disclosures.
  • Understanding how to appropriately address safeguarding concerns and report disclosures to your designated safeguarding lead.
  • Appreciating what specific safeguarding measures you need to effectively implement in sports and physical activity settings.

Module 1: Importance of safeguarding

In this module, you will learn how effective, timely and robust safeguarding is a vital component of any organisation that works with children and young people, what poor safeguarding can result in and why safeguarding is applicable to sport.

Module 2: Statutory guidance and legislation

In this module, you will learn how safeguarding in the UK is covered by a variety of legislation, along with supporting guidance from the NPSCC, United Nations and Sport England, and how to embed a culture of safeguarding.

Module 3: Definition of child abuse

In this module, you will learn how child abuse encompasses numerous forms, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect, along with their respective definitions and possible indicators.

Module 4: Recognising indicators of safeguarding concerns

In this module, you will learn how to recognise, respond, report and record concerns of abuse, which also includes why children and young people may not wish to disclose a safeguarding concern and what may stop adults from taking suitable action.

Module 5: Disclosures and reporting procedures

In this module, you will learn the appropriate procedures involved in reporting and disclosing safeguarding issues, including creating and maintaining records of safeguarding concerns and specific details that you need to include in your report.

Module 7: Safeguards in sports and physical activity settings

In this module, you will learn how to promote and embed proactive safeguarding practice and ensure your setting adheres to a variety of key safeguarding procedures.

Module 8: Reflecting on your learning

In the final module, you’ll reflect on your learning throughout the course and consider the next steps you’ll take following completion.
