Certificate in Understanding Forced Marriage

Forcing a person into marriage is a crime in England and Wales. All school staff should be aware of indicators that children are at-risk of forced marriage, or are currently the victim of one, as part of their wider safeguarding responsibilities, and know how to respond when situations arise.

This essential CPD course provides you with the knowledge and skills understand, identify and support children who may be at risk of or involved in forced marriage.

Delivered by international safeguarding expert Robin Watts, the course has been split into eight bite-sized modules and has been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost-effective and most time-efficient manner. It has been produced in high-quality remote video CPD format which is accessible on any device, anytime, anywhere.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding what makes a marriage legal in the UK and the definition of a forced marriage.
  • Recognising how to identify indicators that a child in your care is at-risk of, or the victim of, a forced marriage.
  • Identifying the laws and orders that exist to prevent forced marriage from occurring.
  • Realising exactly what to do if you suspect a child in your care is a victim of forced marriage and how to offer them support.
  • Understanding some of the key statistics around forced marriage in order to support contextual knowledge.

Course Units

Introduction

This essential CPD course provides you with the knowledge and skills understand, identify and support children who may be at risk of or involved in forced marriage.

Module 1 - Legal marriage in the UK

In this module, you will look at the definition of a ‘legal’ marriage and eligibility criteria for marriage in the UK.

Module 2 – What is forced marriage?

In module 2, you will learn what a forced marriage is defined as in the UK. We will also discuss what the law says about this issue.

Module 3 – Possible signs of forced marriage

In this module, you will learn about the potential warning signs that a forced marriage may have happened or is being arranged.

Module 4 – Indicators of forced marriage

Module 4 will teach you about the possible indicators of a forced marriage, as well as potential triggers that may prompt a forced marriage to take place.

Module 5 – Preventative law

This module will educate you on what measures have been taken in UK law to prevent a forced marriage from occurring, as well as what the process of seeking support would be.

Module 6 – The Forced Marriage Unit (FMU)

Module 6 will address the Forced Marriage Unit and the work they do to prevent and address this ongoing issue.

Module 7 – How to respond and provide support

This module will cover what you should do, if you suspect that a forced marriage is occurring, as well as how you can refer students to the support that’s available.

Module 8 – Statistics

Module 8 will cover the statistics surrounding forced marriage and what their implications for the issue of Forced Marriage as a whole.
