How We Make Teaching Online Safety Easier for Schools

Online safety can be a somewhat daunting and complex subject to deliver to children. Educating them on serious topics, which can have serious consequences, in an age appropriate way, which captures their attention is no easy task.

It’s vital therefore that teachers are provided with the best possible tools and expertise to make sure that they can engage children in the topic and ensure that children feel confident in raising any concerns that they have.

At Thornton Primary School in Bradford, Lyudmila Momot-Booth, Leader of Science and Computing, says that the lesson plans have fit perfectly into the school’s ethos around online safety and revealed that participation on the part of the pupils has been a real success.

We took some time with Lyudmila so she could explain why the lesson plans have been so important in their delivery of online safety messages to their pupils.

Initially, how did you implement our lesson plans? What way(s) did you look to incorporate them?

We use the National Online Safety lesson plans as part of the Computing Curriculum which links to the online safety aspect of Digital Literacy.

Each year group follow the specific learning objectives to ensure yearly coverage of different aspects of Computing. The lessons are taught to children as part of their termly unit or as part of events like Safer Internet Day or Online Safety Week.

What were the children’s initial reactions? Did they engage on the level that you hoped for?

The lessons provided by National Online Safety enabled our pupils to be fully engaged and excited about the content of the lessons as well as the interactive videos and accompanying resources that capture pupils’ attention each time.

The pupils are not only captivated by these videos, but have also demonstrated the ability to retain the knowledge and information which has helped them with their further learning.

How did the online safety lesson plans marry up with the curriculum?

All lesson plans contain learning objectives that link to the online safety aspect of the Computing Curriculum, which supports not only teachers’ workload but also pupils learning.

What did the children enjoy most about the lesson plans?

All children enjoyed all aspects of their online safety lessons as the lesson plans give detailed guidance for teachers who then can deliver these ideas in a fun and engaging way, making the learning process inclusive and memorable for children.
