Safer Internet Day 2020: Delivering an Effective Approach to Online Safety

2020’s Safer Internet Day is taking place today (Tuesday 11th February) and will be celebrated globally with the theme: Together for a better internet.

As time has progressed, the day has grown into a landmark event within the online safety calendar. Spanning an estimated 150 countries worldwide, Safer Internet Day has a clear objective of highlighting emerging online issues, from cyberbullying to social networking.

Our core aims here at National Online Safety very much align with those of Safer Internet Day. We strive to raise awareness of online risks which exist for children, through a wide range of courses, educational resources and classroom packs.

At the heart of everything we do is a real passion to empower school staff, parents and children with all the knowledge and tools they need to gain an in-depth understanding of the potential dangers that could manifest themselves online and how to best react in the event of an incident.

An Effective Approach Requires the Whole School Community

In becoming a certified school member, your school will be given the means to implement an effective approach to online safety, across the board.

We believe that by giving schools comprehensive training and resources, it will give teachers the confidence and expertise to deliver invaluable information around online safety to their students. It will also give children the ability to develop skills which mean they can self-protect against online risks.

Whilst enhancing your knowledge and expertise around online risks, you will also be able to meet your statutory duties in relation to online safety. This includes aligning with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), Relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education, Teaching Online Safety in Schools and the UKCCIS Education for a Connected World Framework.

You will also learn how and what Ofsted may inspect around matters relating to online safety, with the intention to help you implement practice which showcases your commitment to keeping children safe online.

But online safety does not stop at the school gates. Our certified membership also strongly encourages parents to become involved as part of the programme, providing them with the confidence and knowledge to tackle issues around online safety at home.

What’s Included?

Within our Certified School Programme, we provide a range of courses available for all staff to complete on their journey to becoming a certified school. This includes training for school staff & governors, designated safeguarding leads and school staff working with SEND pupils.

Our resources are also made available for the whole school community. Our award-winning #WakeUpWednesday guides provide a wealth of information around the latest online games, platforms and general online risks, with the ability to print and display these posters around the school.

These are in addition to our online safety lesson resources which cover early years all the way through to Key Stage 4. Our interactive lesson resources, featuring some of the most famous faces in Children’s TV, aim to make learning about online safety fun, engaging and imaginative.

Unprecedented access to our library of webinars is provided, which is coupled with a monthly online safety webinar too. Some of the most recent topics we’ve covered include online gaming to online gambling, dealing with disclosures in online safety and understanding the DfE statutory guidance changes.

And now, all our certified members will receive full access to our Essential CPD training. These courses have been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the leanest, most cost-effective and most time-efficient manner. They provide the core content schools need to roll-out statutory training to the entire school workforce.

Besides all the above, National Online Safety will deliver an ongoing system of support to everyone in your organisation. This is through weekly and monthly online safety newsletters, email and phone support, all brought together in your own unique learning hub, where you have the capability to track course progress for the whole school and download completion certificates.

Upon meeting our approval criteria, you will receive NOS Certified School Accreditation, along with a certified school plaque to display.
