About The Webinar

Advertisements Online: Developing Digital Literacy Skills in Pupils | Primary

This webinar will provide school leaders, online safety leads and teachers with an understanding of how online advertising works and practical guidance on how to support pupils to strengthen their awareness and critical thinking skills in order to prevent unhealthy online behaviour.

Advertisements and promotions are a feature of modern life, including for children. In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) states that all adverts must be “legal, decent, honest and truthful”, including those online. However, in truth, as advertising becomes more targeted, even those which meet the ASA criteria can be extremely influential, persuasive or even manipulative.

In this webinar, Dr Raffaello Rossi, lecturer in marketing and researcher who has published various papers recognised at national and international level, will explore the nature of social media marketing, how to recognise persuasive behaviour and practical tips on avoiding social media advertisement.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gaining an insight into the volume and types of techniques used in social media advertising, how it works and recognising the difference to more traditional forms.

  • Understanding the regulatory framework social media advertising operates in with respect to paid-for ads, organic advertisements and influencer marketing.

  • Recognising the importance of being able to recognise social media advertising as commercial persuasion attempt in order start building critical thinking skills.

  • Identifying and understanding different techiniques that can help children and young persons to recognise adverts, and recognise being advertised to.

  • Appreciating how to enhance critical thinking skills to confidently interact with social media advertising and increase awareness about the purpose of the content online.
