This webinar will provide early years managers, leaders, teachers and practitioners with an understanding of and guidance on nurturing children’s digital diet and using the benefits of technology and the internet to support early childhood development.
Research has shown that children in early years can learn valuable skills, including language, problem-solving, and science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) from technology use such as touchscreen apps, video chats and educational TV. However, these benefits often depend on other factors too and should form part of a balanced approach to developing a digital diet for pupils.
In this webinar, Amy Bidgood, lecturer in developmental psychology, and an advocate for encouraging balance in activities in the early years, will explore the concept of a digital diet, ways schools can support healthy technology use and how it can be integrated into children’s lives to benefit their development.
Understanding the digital diet approach to children’s consumption of digital media and how it can be compared to how children may consume food at a young age
Recognising the benefits of children’s digital consumption and technology use and how different activities can support early development
Recognising the benefits of children’s digital consumption and technology use and how different activities can support early development
Understanding the important role that parents have to play in developing a healthy digital diet for young children and how to engage them in early discussions
Recognising how to support children to balance their own digital media use and form habits that they can maintain as they continue to grow
The webinar will discuss teaching online safety in nursery and early years settings and ways to safely introduce tech skills to the very young. It will explore how digital devices can help children to develop and how to engage parents to align activities at home with what is taught in the setting.
The webinar will examine online echo chambers, illustrating how ideas can take hold of individuals and create pathways to radicalisation. It will then discuss in detail what strategies schools can adopt to reduce this risk (such as encouraging critical thinking and a balanced digital diet).
