This webinar will provide headteachers, school leaders and teachers with an understanding of and insight into cyberstalking and how to recognise and respond to the signs that children or young people may need support.
Cyberstalking can cause serious repercussions and can be difficult to combat. Research from Ofcom (2022) shows that 33% of 5-7 year olds and 60% of 8-11 year olds have a social media profile, which means, that as their exposure to the online world increases, so does the potential possibility of children and young people facing these online risks.
In this webinar, Dr Paul Bocij, a researcher, author and educator in online deviance, explores the concept of cyberstalking, discusses a range of case studies to understand the effects cyberstalking can have on children and young people and how schools can support potential victims.
Understanding the various definitions of the term ‘cyberstalking’ and some of the common misconceptions that come with it
Exploring the differences between cyberstalking and other malicious behaviours online, such as cyberbullying and trolling
Appreciating some of the causes of cyberstalking and the incentives that drive people to stalk people online
Recognising the various signs of cyberstalking, as well as the difficulty in identifying the victims of online stalkers
Outlining some of the ways in which schools and parents can support children and young people to avoid or mitigate the risk of becoming s victim of cyberstalking
The webinar will discuss teaching online safety in nursery and early years settings and ways to safely introduce tech skills to the very young. It will explore how digital devices can help children to develop and how to engage parents to align activities at home with what is taught in the setting.
The webinar will examine online echo chambers, illustrating how ideas can take hold of individuals and create pathways to radicalisation. It will then discuss in detail what strategies schools can adopt to reduce this risk (such as encouraging critical thinking and a balanced digital diet).
