Data Management and Protection: Ensure Compliance and Minimise Risk

For: Senior leaders, governors, trustees

Aim: This webinar will provide an introduction to data management in schools. It will offer guidance for relevant leads on areas including data protection laws, data governance, using third-party software and platforms in schools, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Rationale: The UK government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport conducts a yearly study into the cyber resilience of British organisations. In its 2022 report, it identified that 39% of businesses had suffered an online attack or a cyber-security breach in the preceding year. Across the education sector, however, the ratios were significantly higher: 41% of primary schools; 70% of secondary schools; 88% of further education provider and 92% of higher education institutions.

  • Understanding the basics in relation to school data

  • Recognising the requirements and possible risks around third parties

  • Acknowledging the need and process for data protection impact assessments (DPIAs)
