About The Webinar

Encouraging Honest and Open Discussion about Life Online | Secondary

For: Leaders, teachers, teaching assistants, support staff, governors and trustees

Aim: This webinar discusses what school settings can do to encourage a more open dialogue in which students talk about their online lives – giving trusted adults the best chance to offer advice, develop beneficial preventative safeguarding strategies and offer support when needed.

Rationale: The theme for Safer Internet Day 2023 is ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online.’ Encouraging open conversations about what young people do online is a productive way to ensure that schools are offering guidance and education which meet the needs of the school community – provide a safe environment in which young people feel confident in discussing both the positive and negative aspects of their digital lives.

Learning Outcomes

  • Reviewing the statutory guidance around online safety in schools, specifically in relation to Keeping Children Safe in Education

  • Developing knowledge of some common current online safety concerns in schools, and linking these in with the theme of Safer Internet Day 2023

  • Comprehending why students might want not want to discuss their digital lives, and why there might be gaps between what adults and young people perceive as issues

  • Identifying ways to develop an environment where students feel confident about discussing their online lives and any concerns they might have

  • Recognising how educators can respond to conversations to ensure that online safety education meets students’ needs
