About The Webinar

Echo Chambers and Online Radicalisation: Mitigating the Risks | Secondary

For: School leaders, teachers, teaching assistants, support staff, governors and trustees

Aim: The webinar will examine online echo chambers, illustrating how ideas can take hold of individuals and create pathways to radicalisation. It will then discuss in detail what strategies schools can adopt to reduce this risk (such as encouraging critical thinking and a balanced digital diet).

Rationale: With recent United Nations research highlighting a rise in extremism among young people, and the British government issuing updated guidance on the problem, it is important to recognise that radicalisation pathways are not only formed through direct contact. They also exist online as a result of echo chambers: where a single uncontested view or belief is consistently reflected back to users by algorithms which offer people content aligned with their interests.

Learning Outcomes

  • Defining what we mean by online ‘echo chambers’ and clarifying the potential harms to contained within them

  • Considering how digital hygiene and critical thinking skills can impact the resilience of students and teachers

  • Developing awareness of the rise of particular ideologies and subcultures, and understanding the risks they bring

  • Identifying ways to build strong structures in schools to buttress students against the harms of echo chambers, with a focus on radicalisation

  • Understanding the role of the Prevent duty and British Values in creating a strong culture which rejects radical ideologies
