About The Webinar

Engaging Parents and Carers of Children with SEND in Online Safety

This webinar will provide designated safeguarding leads, SENCOs, senior leaders and teachers with practical guidance and advice on how they can engage parents and carers in online safety to support their statutory safeguarding requirements in line with DfE guidance and legislation.

Keeping children safe in education continues to strengthen advice around online safety, including parental engagement and the role parents have to play, especially when children and young people with SEND are at home. It’s important, therefore, that schools use their regular contact with parents and carers to reinforce the importance of children and young people with SEND being safe online.

In this webinar, Beth Davies, an experienced safeguarding practitioner and trainer, will explore how schools can engage parents and carers of children and young people with SEND in the online safety discussion, look at how to overcome common barriers and consider a number of case studies and real-world examples.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding school’s responsibilities to engage parents and carers of children with SEND in online safety as outlined in key DfE guidance, legislation and policy.

  • Recognising the most common obstacles to engaging parents and carers and developing an empathetic mindset to help support ways in overcoming potential barriers.

  • Identifying practical ways to engage parents and carers using a wide range of techniques and taking into account different learning styles.

  • Deeping an understanding of why some families might be ‘harder to reach’ and developing creative ways or more tailored ideas to get them involved.

  • Through analysis of real-world examples and case studies, understand the benefit of developing a ‘drip effect’ that meets parents and carers specific needs.
