About The Webinar

Realising, Recognising and Responding to Gaming Disorder | Primary

This webinar will provide designated safeguarding leads, senior leaders and teachers with guidance and advice on recognising the positive and negative impact that gaming can have on children and young people, including ways to promote a responsible, safe and healthy relationship with playing online.

It’s important to recognise that gaming for many children can provide an escape and lead to a number of positive outcomes. Nonetheless, research has shown that, due to its addictive nature, gaming can quickly take over some children’s lives and impact how they think, behave, sleep, interact with others and ultimately exhibit those characteristics often associated with gaming disorder.

In this webinar, Dr Amanda Giordano, associate professor, award-winning counsellor and specialist in addiction counselling, explores the benefits and harms of gaming, why some children may exhibit addictive behaviour and how we can set them up to become independent, resilient players with a robust awareness of the environment around them.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the basics of gaming online, what can make it so rewarding, the motives for gaming and the various types of games children may engage with.

  • Identifying the potential positive uses of gaming, including educational uses of serious games as well as positive outcomes, eSports and professional gaming.

  • Recognising the links between gaming and potential negative consequences, including how it can impact children’s behaviour and signs of gaming disorder.

  • Realising the benefits of psychoeducation to help children and young people become more knowledgeable about the potential risks and benefits of gaming.

  • Understanding how to best intervene with pupils who demonstrate signs and symptoms of gaming disorder and deciding when more professional help might be needed.
