This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, governors, teachers and support staff with a review of UKCIS guidance into the most effective ways that external resources and speakers can be deployed to further a proactive approach to online safety education.
On 6 October 2022, the UK Council for Internet Safety (UKCIS) issued updated guidance for education settings that wish to use external expertise to support and enhance their online safety teaching. For instance, to support the planned delivery of the curriculum or an awareness raising activity.
This webinar will examine how the revised guidance can be used to facilitate and steer conversations between educational settings and external specialists – not only in developing young people’s digital literacy skills but also in building parental awareness of online safety matters.
Identifying situations when external expertise would be most required or most effective, with suggestions on choosing an appropriate provider
Understanding the variables involved to obtain maximum benefit: accounting for factors such as expectation levels, optimum group size and the nature of any resources to be used
Recognising the need to put appropriate safeguarding protocols in place for all parties – for instance, avoiding ‘shock/scare tactics’ or clarifying the approach to any sensitive topics
Exploring how involving external online safety expertise can interconnect with other areas of the curriculum (PSHE, for instance) or contribute to increasing parental engagement
Learning how to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of external online safety expertise – including longer-term benefits, with suggestions on how these might be measured
This webinar will discuss the importance of peer mentorship in schools – offering practical guidance on how to develop a peer mentorship programme for learning about online safety and ensure its impact for the mentors, the mentees and the wider school.
