About The Webinar

Internet Culture: Empowering Staff to Respond to New and Emerging Risks | Secondary

For: Headteachers, school leaders and DSLs

Aim: This webinar focuses on potentially dangerous elements of internet culture such as polarisation, extremism and pervasive anonymity, exploring ways to upskill staff so that they feel empowered to respond to these risks effectively and appropriately.

Rationale: As outlined in Keeping Children Safe in Education, all school staff should receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection training (including online safety training) at induction – and that it should be regularly updated. This webinar offers such an update on current risks in internet culture, giving insight into how to engage staff in training: ensuring the school is compliant and staff possess the knowledge and skills to respond to online hazards throughout the year.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognising that there has been a shift in the way that our broader culture is being driven, and accepting the importance of engaging openly and frankly with internet culture

  • Learning to differentiate between commonplace internet sociability and potentially toxic internet culture

  • Understanding how misinformation, echo chambers and ‘alternative truth’ create a challenging environment for children and young people to navigate

  • Identifying the possible barriers to entry for digital CPD and considering strategies to mitigate these barriers

  • Realising how to encourage a culture of can-do, resilient digital learners and developing digital leaders
