About The Webinar

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: Online Content and Mental Health | Primary

This webinar will provide governors, headteachers, senior leaders and teaching staff with an understanding of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), the potential impacts of NSSI content online and how to identify, respond and support pupils who may experience NSSI.

The motives for NSSI can be varied and often difficult to understand. Quantifying a link between social media use and children’s health is complicated but whilst the internet presents a range of online risks, it has been stated that many factors affect mental health and it can be difficult to disentangle these factors from any effect caused by screen or social media use.

In this webinar, Dr Amanda Giordano, an associate professor of counselling at the University of Georgia, author and award-winning counsellor, will explore what NSSI is, the potential relationship with content online and what practical steps schools can take to support pupils’ mental health who may be engaging in NSSI.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding what non-suicidal self-injury is, the types of NSSI and its prevalence among children and young people.

  • Recognising how the internet and social media can exacerbate NSSI, understanding social contagion and the potential impact of NSSI related content online.

  • Gaining an understanding of the signs and behaviors that a pupil may be engaging in NSSI and it’s links to suicide, mental illness and behavioural addiction.

  • Identifying how to respond when there is a concern that a child or young person might be experiencing NSSI and where to seek additional support.

  • Understanding strategies and activities they can be used in the classroom to support the mental and physical wellbeing of pupils.
