This webinar, in collaboration with nasen (the National Association for Special Educational Needs), will provide senior leaders SENDCOs, designated safeguarding leads (DSLs) and all teaching staff with practical advice and guidance on helping learners with SEND to stay safe online and get the most out of their digital activities.
The shift to remote education once again has brought online safety into sharp focus. Despite many schools strengthening their policies around safeguarding online and digital literacy, the speed with which increased online activity developed over the last year may not have allowed for an extensive consideration of the needs of pupils with SEND.
In this webinar, Dr Jamie Galpin, Education Officer and lead on CPDL at nasen with 18 years’ experience in SEND, will explore what schools can do to support children with SEND, how their needs might be differentiated and how staff can better understand safeguarding concerns online.
Understanding your safeguarding responsibilities to children with SEND and adopting different approaches to help keep them safe online.
Recognising what dangers children with SEND are more vulnerable to and how to help build their digital literacy and manage different risks.
Identifying ways that school can use technology to help them become more inclusive and help children with SEND benefit and develop their skills in the online world.
Recognising how to deliver online safety education in an age-appropriate way and how differences in working memory can impact remote learning.
Understanding how the internet can act as an instrument for potential social and emotional growth in children with SEND and help them to flourish.
The webinar will discuss teaching online safety in nursery and early years settings and ways to safely introduce tech skills to the very young. It will explore how digital devices can help children to develop and how to engage parents to align activities at home with what is taught in the setting.
The webinar will examine online echo chambers, illustrating how ideas can take hold of individuals and create pathways to radicalisation. It will then discuss in detail what strategies schools can adopt to reduce this risk (such as encouraging critical thinking and a balanced digital diet).
