About The Webinar

Recognising Emotional Vulnerability and Seeking Validation Online | Primary

This webinar will provide senior leaders, designated safeguarding leads and teaching staff with practical advice and guidance on how to identify the signs of emotional vulnerability, and how to support children in beginning to build their internal validation and resilience in a destigmatising way.

Children seek approval from family, teachers and friends to feel validated and good about themselves. With an extended peer group available online, however – and a proliferation of sites and communities which promote self-harm, eating disorders or suicide, this quest for validation can lead children into dangerous areas.

In this webinar Dr Rina Bajaj, counselling psychologist with almost 20 years’ experience of working with children, focuses on mental health and wellbeing and discusses the human need for belonging, outlines the normal processes of forming social connections, and highlights the risks associated with seeking online validity.

Learning Outcomes

  • Comprehending the potential impacts and possible risks of children going online to seek external validation.

  • Recognising the signs of emotional vulnerability in children and appreciating which factors may make certain children more likely to develop it.

  • Gaining the tools to understand risk-related signs and help build digital resilience – including understanding the influence of content promoting self-harm, suicide and eating disorders.

  • Assimilating appropriate ways to communicate with children about managing their emotions effectively and staying safe on the internet.

  • Identifying trusted, helpful resources that can be used productively with pupils within a primary school setting.
