About The Webinar

Recognising and Responding to Social Media Addiction | Primary

This webinar will provide senior leaders and teachers with an understanding of what makes social media so enticing to children and adolescents, as well as the risks associated with social media addiction and practical tools to support excessive use.

In the UK, 33% of 5-7 year olds and 60% of 8-11 year olds have their own social media profile. Studies have shown that young users can become dependent on social media and meet different criteria for addiction or excessive use, with the consequences linked to characteristics like anxiety, depression, lower self-esteem and poor sleep quality.

In this webinar, Amanda Giordano, an associate professor of counselling who specialises in addictions counselling, explores what makes social media so attractive to children and adolescents, how addition might be defined and what ways schools can respond to users who may be displaying signs of overuse.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the features, trends and rewarding properties of social media platforms, particularly those aspects designed to keep users engaged

  • Gaining an expert insight into the prevalence and motives of social media use in children and adolescents, including gender differences and immediate gratification

  • Appreciating how to recognise problematic social media use, potential negative consequences and criteria for behavioural addictions

  • Understanding the phenomenon of ‘fear of missing out’ and how it relates to social media use among adolescents, as well as various forms of cyberbullying it can lead to

  • Exploring ways in which psychoeducation about social media can be provided, alongside support for students as they use social media platforms
