This webinar will provide designated safeguarding leads, senior leaders, teachers and all staff with practical guidance and support on how they can create a safe space for children to disclose incidents they may have experienced online in line with statutory guidance and legislation.
All staff should know what to do if a child tells them they are being abused, bullied or have been the victim of online harm. They should be able to reassure pupils that they are being taken seriously and that they will be supported and kept safe. Staff should also know what barriers to disclosure children may face and take steps to help them overcome them as much as they can.
In this webinar, Beth Davies, an experienced safeguarding practitioner and trainer, will explore how schools can ensure pupils feel comfortable disclosing online safety concerns, discuss key policy and guidance and consider ways to create an environment which always has the best interests of the child in mind.
Understanding key legislation, guidance and policy around safeguarding children and young people from online harm and realising schools’ responsibilities
Building knowledge and understanding of the types of disclosure that might arise in the context of online safety
Recognising the barriers children and young people may face when considering the disclosure of an online safety concern or incident
Analysing real-world examples and case studies in order to understand the importance of children and young people disclosing concerns and the benefits this can bring
Practical guidance on how to create a safe environment where pupils feel confident enough to disclose concerns and identifying best practice techniques in responding to disclosures
The webinar will discuss teaching online safety in nursery and early years settings and ways to safely introduce tech skills to the very young. It will explore how digital devices can help children to develop and how to engage parents to align activities at home with what is taught in the setting.
The webinar will examine online echo chambers, illustrating how ideas can take hold of individuals and create pathways to radicalisation. It will then discuss in detail what strategies schools can adopt to reduce this risk (such as encouraging critical thinking and a balanced digital diet).
