Safeguarding Online 2021: Understanding Changes to the DfE KCSiE 2021 Proposed Statutory Guidance

On the 10th December 2020, the DfE published their draft ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSiE) 2021’ guidance for consultation. The process closes on 4th March 2021 and seeks views on the proposed changes due to take effect from September 2021.

The document outlines the statutory requirements relating to online safety that all schools and colleges must adhere to in respect of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

This mini-webinar will provide governors, school leaders, headteachers, designated safeguarding leads (DSLs), teachers and all non-teaching staff with an understanding of the proposed revisions and offer advice and clarity on the key updates to safeguarding children online.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognising how the new guidance places a greater emphasis on safeguarding children online and developing a whole school approach to online safety.

  • Understanding the core changes around the management of safeguarding, role of senior leaders and updates relating to online safety training.

  • Identifying where new guidance is being proposed, particularly around the different definitions of abuse and the relationship between abuse online and offline.

  • Understanding the proposed changes to developing an effective child protection policy and implementing online safety into curriculum planning.

  • Recognising where the new guidance document provides a greater emphasis on reviewing existing approaches to online safety, including an annual review and risk assessment.
