About The Webinar

Staff Abuse Online: Mitigating Risks and Responding to Incidents | Secondary

This webinar will provide governors, headteachers, senior leaders and all school staff with practical guidance and support on understanding, developing and implementing measures to help keep themselves safe online and guard against online abuse or harassment.

There has been a marked rise in online abuse against teaching staff. Schools have reported pupils making explicit, offensive and harmful videos on social media or making damaging accusations which have led to many staff taking time off for stress or indeed quitting the profession altogether. That’s why it’s important all staff have the knowledge and skills to protect themselves online.

In this webinar Jonathan Taylor, international online safety expert and former covert internet investigator, explores what is driving the level the abuse and harassment towards staff, what damage it is causing and what prevention strategies can be put in place to help reduce the risk of being targeted.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding and defining acts that constitute online abuse against staff and the legislation under which offenders can be prosecuted.

  • Recognising the impact that online abuse and harassment can have on school staff and the policies and procedures that should be in place to help deliver an effective response.

  • Identifying best practice actions that staff can take if subjected to online abuse and the importance of delivering a whole school approach to help prevent incidents.

  • Realising the different ways that online abuse can take place and on what platforms, including the popularity of online challenges on social media.

  • Recognising the practical steps that all staff can take to help reduce the risk of being targeted online or becoming a victim of online abuse.
