This webinar will provide headteachers, school and college leaders, teachers and non-teaching staff with an understanding of and practical advice on the relationship between harmful content online and children’s mental health and how this may manifest into suicidal thoughts and self-harm.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport states that more needs to be done to protect vulnerable users from harmful content and behaviour, particularly that which encourages suicide or self-harm. Online content can often be distressing and triggering for children and young people. It is therefore important to check in with young people about how they feel when they see something that makes them feel uncomfortable online.
In this webinar, Alice Newton-Leeming, Director of Mental Health Learning who has worked in the field of suicide prevention for over 14 years, discusses children and young people’s digital behaviours and online use in the context of suicide prevention and practical guidance on how to respond when there is a concern.
Recognising and having an awareness of the prevalence of suicide and suicide risk among children and young people.
Understanding what can contribute to suicidal thoughts, including the areas of concern online that can be dangerous for vulnerable children and young people.
Realising how to support children and young people with respect to online use and mental health and wellbeing.
Identifying the signs and indicators of distress and unhappiness in children and young people following online use.
Understanding how to react and respond to a child or young person having suicidal thoughts, and having knowledge of a range of services that can provide support.
