About The Webinar

Supporting Safe Social Media Use in Learners with SEND | Primary

This webinar will provide headteachers, senior leaders, teachers and support staff with an understanding of how children and young people with SEND currently tend to use social media – and, crucially, how schools can help to ensure their safety on such highly populated platforms.

Ofcom’s ‘Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes Report 2022’ highlighted that children with “impacting or limiting conditions” are more inclined to be active on social media – but also more likely to have negative experiences on TikTok, Snapchat and the rest. Engaging with social media can be hugely beneficial for children with SEND, but – given that the potential risk to them is higher – we need to be aware of these hazards and able to advise SEND learners on identifying online threats.

In this webinar, Catrina Lowri – an experienced special needs teacher and SENDCo – explores what settings can do to educate SEND learners around social media: providing effective safeguarding while imbuing them with the skills to interact with the online world in safety.

Learning Outcomes

  • Appreciating how children and young people with SEND are using social media: which platforms they enjoy, and how they engage with them

  • Realising the various benefits that using social media safely can have for children and young people with SEND

  • Comprehending the increased level of risk (including real life examples and case studies) and how this might be addressed and prepared for effectively

  • Understanding the role that schools must play in safeguarding children and young people against online harms – for all learners, but specifically for those with SEND

  • Absorbing practical tips on appropriate ways to educate and empower young people with SEND to interact safely and positively online
